For many years I have mostly painted en plein air. When painting en plein air, I can capture the real essence of that moment, of that day, like the clouds, the light and really observe colours. So much gets lots in translation when painting just from a photograph. Having spent most of my life painting from life, what I have found is that I can now paint from photographs differently, e.g. understanding colours that are present in nature and how to adapt this when painting. My subject matters are all about the relationship between humanity and nature; how I experience that interaction and my emotional response to it as an artist. My landscape subjects vary, for example seascapes, historical sites, it could just be the pattern I see or the composition. Emotions and colours are always the primary pulls for me and how I can use their magic to create what I see in my mind as well as what is in front of me. Experimenting and loving colour is and will always be my lifelong journey. I regularly throw down the gauntlet, to myself, in how much further I can go as an artist. I’m always wanting to improve, challenging myself to paint more complex landscapes in terms of composition, atmosphere, feelings and technical skill.
